Looks great, if it's not blown out! Weather underground says about 13mph due West from around 11 to 1400 hrs, then switching south at 8mph starting at 1700 hrs. XC Skies says 5-10mph rotating from SW at 1100 to WNW at 1700. Top of usable lift is supposed to be approaching 10K with the strongest thermals at around 600fpm. Perfect! Around 35% cloud cover and zero chance of rain. I'm heavily considering driving all the way from Flag to take part in this. It's a toss-up though, because the Craters have some good thermic action too. I'll check the Craters and if they're covered in snow I'll come down south.

I wish I could fly Mustang on Sunday, but I have an unbreakable comittment. Good Luck!

Hello all... My name is Jake and I speedfly here in arizona. Me and my flying buddy are heading down to mustang sunday to try and get some flights in. We both are not paragliders, but are members of AZHG. We both have a background in skydiving, swooping, and base jumping. We both actually fly canopies alot smaller than our speedwing, which are both gin nano's. We have alot of knowledge in both base and skydiving, having done many demo jumps and broke 1 world record.I practice leave no trace ethics, and understand how important sites are to both hang gliders and paragliders. I would never do anything to "burn" a site down. I hope to meet you all on here soon. I am thinking of taking up paragliding sometime, just been busy with the other stuff! The Mustangs aren't an insured site, so USHPA membership is not required. SAHGA does appreciate the "no trace" ethic, though, and obviously we want everyone who flies there to do so safely and have fun.

I don't know if you've flown the Mustangs before. If you have a chance to hook up with one of the PG pilots for Sunday they can show you the trail up to the launches and give you some tips about wind directions. As an HG pilot I don't fly there, so don't know enough about the site to help. But I hope you guys will get some great flights.

Will any of you PG guys be able to meet Jake out there? If so, please get a photo or two, I'd like to see what those wings look like.

Current weather predictions indicate Mustang will be perfect tomorrow afternoon. Jake- you're welcome to fly Mustang in whatever size wing you want. Have fun. There aren't too many rules for the 'stangs. just close the cow gates behind you.

Its a 900ft vertical hike. Not particularly hard as there's good footing the whole way.

Jake you are certainly welcome to join us at Mustang, but I'm a little confused. I thought speed flying required snow and skis. Mt. Lemon would be the only place to ski in southern Arizona, and I've never heard of any speed flying there. Mustang is rocks and cactus, and at least from where we fly, there is no place to base jump.

It's a bit early to know what tomorrow will bring at Mustang. The forecast looks good so far, but the NWS already blew today's forecast. I'll check the weather in the morning. Also, after the Mustang test hike Tuesday, my back is still a bit questionable for a followup hike, but we'll see what tomorrow brings.

There's a bit of terminology discrepancy that hasn't entirely worked itself out. I was told that speedflying is foot-launched while speedriding is ski-launched, but other people say the opposite. Anyway, what he's doing is footlaunching one of those itty bitty wings. Mustang is one of the few sites in AZ that usually has strong enough winds and a steep enough slope with few obstacles on launch and LZ to be able to speedfly. Craters is only good when the winds are above 20 because it's such a gentle slope.

Oh, and I'll be there today at about 12 so I can show Jake the ropes.

I'm planning to go down early (~10:00) and do some exploring until it gets flyable.

The morning forecast looks good for Mustang, but I may pass today to give my back a little more time to recover.

Thanks for the terminology explanation Wyatt. From my memory of the craters, Mustang's launch slope is not any steeper, and there are more potential obstacles to negotiate on the way to the LZ. Also, if the forecast is correct, today will not be a high wind day, which is why it could be good for paragliding.
