Embedding pictures and video in your posts.

Post by jlowery » Sat Nov 07, 2009 7:37 pm

Updated 3/9/2014 for the current version of the message board Gallery software

I've been asked several times about how to include pictures or videos in posts on the SAHGA forums. To embed a picture or video in your post, you first need to upload the picture or video to a host. These instructions are for photos in the Album section of this message board, photos uploaded to Flickr (http://www.flickr.com), and for YouTube videos (http://www.youtube.com).

For photos in the SAHGA Forum album:

1. Upload your image to the SAHGA Forums album. Note that the maximum image size supported for uploading is 1280 x 960 pixels - if your photo is larger you will need to resize it before uploading. There are many free online services that allow you to resize and crop images - try http://www.picresize.com/, or http://www.webresizer.com/, or http://www.resizeyourimage.com/.
2. Once you've uploaded your image, or selected a previously-loaded image, click through from the index to the full-sized picture.
3. At the bottom of the picture, locate the box that says "Image-BBCode:" and copy (with the mouse, right-click, Copy; or with the keyboard ctrl-C) the contents of the second box, the one that starts out "url=http://www.sahga.com/forum3/gallery..."
4. Return to the forum where you want to post your message, create and edit your message. Where you would like the image to be, paste (with the mouse, right-click, Paste; or with the keyboard ctrl-V).
5. In the text you past you will see a bit that says "&mode=thumbnail". If you would like the image to be displayed full-sized, remove that bit. If you would like it smaller than full-sized but bigger than thumbnail, replace it with "&mode=medium".
6. Preview the post to ensure the image is displayed correctly.
7. Submit the post as you normally would. The photo will appear in your post as a clickable image. When clicked, the browser will offer to download the image.

Here is an example of a "mode=thumbnail" image:

Flickr:

1. Upload your image to Flickr, OR select the image on Flickr that you would like to include.
2. After uploading or selecting the image, you will be on the "photostream" page. Click on the picture you just uploaded.
3. A new page will be displayed, showing the image with a menu along the top. Click on the "Share this photo" icon (a small box with an arrow going up and right).
4. Click on the Thumbtack icon.
4. Select the image size you want to embed in your post, or just leave the default (Medium).
5. Click on the block of text below the image size, copy the entire block of text, and paste it into your post.
6. Preview the post to ensure the image is displayed correctly.
7. Submit the post as you normally would.

This is a Flickr photo with size "small (320x217). If you click on it, you'll be redirected to my Flickr photostream, where you can look at the photo in different sizes:

YouTube:

1. Upload your video to YouTube, OR select the video on YouTube that you would like to include.
2. Below the video box, across from the like/unlike icons, find the "Share" link and click it.
3. Important: Ensure that the "Share with playlist starting from..." link is not checked.
4. Copy the entire text in the link box and paste it into your post.
4. Select the text you just pasted, and click on the Post editor's "YouTube" botton. You should see the word "YouTube" in square brackets appear before and after the link.
5. Preview the post to ensure the link is displayed correctly.
6. Submit the post as you normally would.

This is a YouTube video. If you click on it, it will start to play:

Adding instructions on posting FaceBook pictures/videos.

Go to the FaceBook page and click on the image you want to paste in a forum post.
Once you see the emage enlarged, right click it and select "Copy Image URL".
Go back to your post in the SAHGA forum and click on the button that says "Img", just above the textarea.
Paste the URL of the face book image in between the [img]and[/img] tags.
