wind trend for Mustang

Post by azwyatt » Fri Nov 27, 2009 8:40 pm

So I've noticed that whenever the forecast calls for W winds at Mustang, the winds are N. And whenever the forecasted winds are SW usually W or NW. So, if all the forecasts call for a S wind, will it in fact be SW or W? That's what I'm hoping for.

It's a good thought Wyatt, but the answer to your question is not really. Mustang is a tricky site because it requires light SW winds to be flyable. Often here when it is SW (prefrontal) it is too strong, and our light postfrontal west winds tend to be NW. Generally, Mustang may be flyable if the 6-9,000' winds aloft forecast is in single digits anywhere from SSW to W. Anything over single digits is usually blown out because Mustang tends to set up its own venturi and is stronger than the predicted winds aloft. Due south is often SE and may just end up being over the back.

Thanks for the info, Fred. Saved me a trip down there.

Damn, damn, damn. Hoping for some good conditions. Guess I'll have to settle for South Mtn again.

Although, I'd have to say that we've been remarkably good at calling Mustang days this past year. It's been a long time since I've had to hike down.
