Miller Canyon now scheduled to re-open July 31

Post by jlowery » Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:27 am

Very bad news from the US Forest Service.

I just spoke to their office in Sierra Vista, and was told that the re-opening date for upper Carr Canyon road has now been slipped to July 31st, 2012.

Frankly, in speaking to them I did not get the impression that there was any confidence that the July date would hold, either.

Very bad news indeed. Between Miller being closed and Eric Smith being away in New York State, it looks like my hangliding trip in April will be more of the sightseeing type. Perhaps a few trips to the Phoenix area to fly might work if anyone wants to fly there. I should be available to drive for PG’s occasionally if there are no HG trips planned. Either way I will be spending the month of April in Tucson and hope to see you all at some point.

A little more detail, FWIW.

Apparently the USFS has been doing work on the Carr Canyon campgrounds. See the March 3rd post here: http://dogsnotonmywindshield.blogspot.com/.

The closures in Miller Canyon were lifted on March 6th. Upper Carr is still closed until July 31.

Upper Carr now open to pedestrians and cyclists

Post by jlowery » Fri Mar 23, 2012 2:17 pm

Another change. Pedestrians and cyclists can now use upper Carr Canyon road. Vehicles are still excluded. No explanation is given other than "public safety". Apparently you're safer on foot or on a bicycle than in your car/truck.

Note that this latest release still has the April 15th date, but the USFS Sierra Vista office has told me on two separate occasions that it would remain closed to vehicle traffic until July 31st.
