Whit-
I'm calling Mustangs for Saturday, which is a paragliding site. Not that HG's can't fly there- it's just a bitch of a hike with aluminum on your shoulder. It's been done.

It's semi-rare that we get just the right wind velocity coming from the SW which is perfect for our easiest Paragliding site. It's our only PG site with a big wide reasonably sloped launch area, and a big flat open LZ right at the base of the hill. Plus, the hike's not so bad and it has easy 2wd access. Our most convenient and safest site (wind permitting)

My call right now would be to leave town around 11am, get to the LZ before 12;30 and be ready to launch by 2pm. Then kick dirt for 3 hours and hike down.

The evening sounding update looks perfect for tomorrow. Base wind 9kts from the SW. But, increasing to 11kts WSW towards 5pm, so better to be there on the early side. Could get over 15kts on launch.

uh... Just Lew and I?

It's looking good today!

I just got back from points west and checked the evening update. Could be light SW tomorrow, but things are a bit unsettled right now. If it is SW I'd be up for Mustang. I'll check the update in the AM.

Flight Report

Post by morey » Sat Jan 24, 2009 9:33 am

For those playing at home, it was a perfect Mustang day.

Fred motored up from the LZ about the time we got to launch, and verified that it was as soarable as it seemed. Ross launched first at 2:45. He rose quickly, but then found himself in a down cycle and made a great save. Learning from Ross's error, I waited for the beginning of a cycle so that I'd be high when it ended. Terry was in the air shortly afterwards and we enjoyed the 400fpm thermals that took us typically to 7500msl. It was an up and down day, and you needed to be careful not to be caught low when the mountain decided to take a breath. Ross and Terry both eventually succumbed to one of these down cycles, oddly enough while I was in a 600fpm core by the biscuit that tossed me up to over 8Kft. I stuck around until glassoff when Lew joined myself and Fred, who powered up and landed a few times today. The glassoff was classic 'stang.

Stu Pearson, a new P2 from Vail, came out on his first PG SoAz excursion today and kited his crispy new wing for the first time in the LZ. But, not having a reserve chute, he opted to enjoy the hike to launch, sans wing.

Here's a quickie video:
