Flying This Weekend

As usual the forecasts are conflicted. I'm available either day. Miller? South Mountain?

Weekend Flying

Post by Fred » Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:49 am

I think it's still too early to tell, but at the moment the forecasts are looking SW both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday looks stronger than Sunday. If the current forecast holds there is a possibility that Mustang could be flyable Sunday - something almost unheard of this time of year. Also, if it's light enough Sunday Miller could be flyable in the morning before it turns SW. I'll check back after the evening update.

I am also in..
but right now it looks like that Sunday is probably the better choice to go flying.... Birgit would drive us to the Miller launch if necessary...

I could do Sunday if the forecast looks reasonable, and particularly if Birgit or anyone else wouldn't mind driving for us. :)

Right now Dr. Jack is guessing a top of lift around 14000 MSL, -3 about 10000. Lift around 600 fpm, and wind in the boundary layer 5-10 SW. So it all depends on whether the morning winds will support allow launching. ADDS says "maybe".

My trusty old Jeep Cherokee has gone to the big scrapyard in the sky, so I've got the Jeep Liberty racked and radioed and ready to try out.

<sniff> I have fond memories of the Cherokee. bye bye.
I gather you took advantage of the Clunker thing?

My wife is in the market for a new fuel efficient car, but her old one isn't sufficiently clunky. Can we buy a clunker off craig's list for $500 and take it into a dealer and get $4500 for it?

Oh baby- you're mine: http://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/1323295894.html

Yeah, I confess I felt a little bad about letting it go. I got that Jeep early in 1998, only about a year after I got into hang gliding. It's been a good solid truck the whole time.

Sadly, no. You have to prove you (personally) have had it registered and insured for the last two years. The biggest pain of the whole deal (managable pain, to be sure) was the clunker paperwork.

Sweet Craislist ride, however

My thoughts are with you JLo, I too have lost a jeep, she was only 14. So sad. I'll check back to see if you guys are going to Miller.

The Trusty Jeep

How about a memorial Miller fly-in for the trusty old Cherokee? It seems like the least we can do in remembrance of all those rides it gave us up to launch.

I'm assuming we've all agreed on Sunday. Please ring me tonight if the plan changes.

Forecast

Post by Fred » Fri Aug 14, 2009 7:14 pm

I just checked the evening forecast update and Saturday looks pretty west. I think Sunday holds the best chance for flying. Mustang Sunday afternoon is still also a possibility.

Count me in for Sunday, I'll drive if needed. I will need to catch a ride because my truck was stolen 2 weeks ago tonight. I managed to find it on my own after 5 days. It's being repaired and will be ready monday. Thanks!

Thanks so much for volunteering to Drive, Whitney. That's a bummer about your truck. The forecast for tomorrow is still somewhat marginal for Miller. I'm going to recheck after the evening update. Mustang is also still on the possibility list as the forecast is SW - the only question is how light or strong.

Let's be optimistic: Miller in the morning and a glassoff at Mustang.

I am also interested and available for some (PG) flying Sunday, and will keep an eye on the message board.
