Labor day weekend flying

The flying weather for Saturday looks hopeless, so Lorraine and I will be leaving for the Mingus Fly-Out on Friday morning around 6 AM. I plan to drive back Sunday, early if it's overcast as predicted, late if it's flyable.
If anyone else is going to Mingus but doesn't have a driver, let me know. Lorraine will be driving retrieve for me if the flying works out, and there's room for a few other pilots.
If Monday looks any better down here I'd be willing to give it a try.

I'm staying in town. Will watch the weather and can certainly fly. Perhaps an early PG flight before it ODs?
As of Friday Morning, the direction and velocity are perfect for Miller early Saturday 5-9kts ESE. Clouds will start building seriously at 11am- according to the skew-T plots. It will probably be cloudy to overcast, but could be smooth and bouyant, or just a sledder. Cloudbase 9500-10Kft
5:30pm Friday. Model changing. Much more moisture now, cloudbase lowered to launch level. winds are light but all over the place in direction. not looking good.
Saturday Morning- Ha, the forecast was completely wrong. perfect weather for flying the Huachucas this morning. clear, light ESE, cloudbase will be at 10K. Doah!

Re: Labor day weekend flying
One for two so at Mingus so far. We got here around 10:30 AM Friday morning and it looked great, just a few puffy cumulous around. Set up in a group of 8 or 9 gliders as it started to OD. One paraglider launched and flirted with cloud suck before heading out. Len Clements, a local HG pilot, got to launch and waited through maybe 15-20 minutes of light in, light down, crappy cycles. He finally gave up because it was getting really threatening. One other HG pilot, Randy Skywalker, gave it a try but also had to back off because it was blowing down.
Then it started raining. When I say "raining", I mean the hammer of Thor came down on us in buckets and sheets. Dodging lightning, Gliders blowing over and flipping, marble-sized hail, mud and pine needles in everything. I finally got the glider on the roof dripping mud and rainwater. That was interesting.
Saturday morning looked bad, solid overcast, but maybe 6 HG and 6 PG flew, including me. I couldn't believe people were launching with a solid, dark OD above, but they were. Most got above launch at least briefly and the first group made it to the 10th Street LZ. Fred Leonard is here and was watching conditions, but I don't think he flew.
I was the last one off, and after a sled ride in moderately bouyant air landed with three other HG pilots at the Cottonwood Airport. As we broke down it started to rain in earnest, so we were pretty wet again by the time our rides got there. I met a half-dozen soaked PG pilots hiking out from the bailout while I waited for Lorraine at the Airport office.
The forecast has changed again, and Sunday is looking like it could work. I'll post again when I know.

Hi John,
Sounds like you guys had a soggy couple of days. I am in Tucson now and waiting to hear from Eric. If I don't get a call from him and pilots are going to Miller I will meet you there to assist and take pictures. I am at my apartment and can be reached at 520-303-0707 for the next 2 weeks.

Hi, Tom
I just got back from Mingus an hour ago. I got another 16 minute sled ride today, as did most of the other pilots who launched by the time I left. There were five of us at Cottonwood Airport, but I did see one HG setting up to land at the 10th street park as Lorraine and I were leaving for Tucson. So my glider finally got put into the bag dry, for a change.
AFAIK, Eric is planning on training up at McCartney Road in Casa Grande on Monday.
I haven't heard from anyone else, so guess I'll do the family thing at home Monday. Maybe we can get together for a real flying day next weekend?
Thanks,
John
