30 Sept 2010

Toms last flying day turned out quite well! In his words his best flight this trip!

We met in the LZ around 10:30. Conditions looked quite good! SE 8 to 10mph. Arrived at launch to find 12 to 15 straight in! We set up an by then, 12:00 or so, it had picked up an was a bit gusty,15 gusting to 20.
I launched Tom around noon. He rose rapidly in the lift to 500 over.
I launched my self in the Falcon around 12:30, shot straight up!
We cruised around at 8300 to 8400 for a while. I ventured up the canyon to Carr peak an lured Tom up there. We were able to stay at 9K + at Carr peak.
I worked a few thermals in the canyon an got Tom to venture out front an circle back in a few good ones. We were able to climb to 10K.
I landed after an hour an forty. Tom hung in there for two hours plus!
Tom gave me a ride back up to launch, the gate anyway in his rental. We drove down an headed home around 6pm.
Great day,good flying!

Thanks for the post Eric,

Not only was it the best flight of my trip, but definitely the most exciting and most memorable of all my trips in Arizona. Thank you so much Eric for convincing me to fly up to Carr Peak, something I would not have done on my own in fear of not making it back out safely to the LZ. There really was a lot of ridge lift and thermals last Thursday which made the trek to Carr Peak reasonably straight forward. During my 2 hour and 6 minute flight, a most unusual event happened which I am still shaking my head about. While soaring I went over the falls in some turbulence which I have always enjoyed and thought nothing of it. Shortly after that Eric called over on the radio and told me he just watched my left wing tip washout tube plummet 2000’ feet, to around the launch area. How Eric is able to notice details like that while flying is a total mystery to me. The only other thing I have lost while flying was a circa Kodak 110 instamatic camera soaring Hansen’s Gap in Tennessee in the 80’s. I had a great time as I always do when I come down and really enjoyed the Miller fly-in and the award festivities. Thanks to everybody for your hospitality and I look forward to seeing you next September.

Cheers Tom

yeah-
and he sees those things with only one decent eye. I guess it's a good one.

Glad that the AZ thermals treated you well. Miller is a tremendous site and we're lucky to have it.
