I'm also interested. I'll bring my wing to work so I can leave at noon if you decide to go. From what I am seeing on ADDS, RUC soundings, and Air Sports Net, it looks too North for Mustang at this time. My work phone is 318-8186.

I agree with Ed. Looks like a Box day. I'll look again in the morning and decide.

If you'd like, I can drive us up to launch if someone is willing to give me a lift back up there afterward. I don't want to hike back up after dark.

Visiting pilots would like to join Box trip today. Please advise on time to meet in LZ. Have 4WD, willing to drive car retrieve in evening as suggested (car quite full of stuff - better for retrieve than delivery). Also happy to hike to launch! 858-336-5391, Dave or Antonella.

I can drive my 2 wheel pickup to a spot on the road (on the back side of Box - I think it is FR 4096) just before the really bad spot. It is a 20 to 25 minute hike to the usual parking spot from there. How about meeting at the Box LZ at 1:30? I can be reached at home at 749-1296.

Ed, two out of town pilots, and I are planning to meet at the Box LZ at 1 PM today (Tuesday , Dec. 28). Ed is planning to drive up to the backside trail. John, there is room for more in Ed's vehicle.

I'm in. Ed, let me know where and when you want to meet. I'm coming from the NW side of town.

John,
I am leaving from the U of A campus. There is a Taco Bell on the SW corner of Campbell and Speedway. We could meet there at 11.40 or out at the LZ. My phone is 318 8186

I'll turn up in the LZ as close to 1:00 p.m. as I can manage. If anyone else wants a ride, ring me at 520-906-4868.

Flight Debrief

Post by hileman » Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:33 am

Five pilots, John Wolf, Lew Smith, myself, and visiting pilots Dave and Antonella from San Diego met in the Box LZ and drove to the top. Winds were light with moderate cycles right up the spine, so we waited a while expecting the wind to switch around enough to use the north launch. It did finally and first off was Lew. Conditions were light but soarable in a gentle glass off. Lew was quickly followed by Antonella, John, Dave, and myself. All had good clean launches. By the time I got off, Lew and Antonella were enjoying the lift out toward the false peak and first knoll and points there about, including well out away from the ridge. John, Dave and I soared between the main peak, false peak, and over to the car park area. Separation was easy as I was always a little below the others. The lift began to moderate just before sunset and after a few scratching passes, I left for the LZ followed by John. Dave hung out over the main peak for a while longer. We all had good landings in very smooth and light conditions. Dave and Antonella drove me back up to retrieve my truck for which I am grateful. We paused for a while to look at the stars and milky way showing clearly through the crisp night air. Another great day at Box was enjoyed by all.

A big thank-you to Ed for hauling us all up the mountain in his new truck and to Dave and Antonella for handling the retrieve.
