Sierrita mountain range exploration notes

Post by Eric Tucker » Sun Apr 17, 2011 9:50 pm

I've done some exploring of the Sierrita mountains a few times over the past few weeks. Here's what I found...
It's definitely not Indian reservation land. The McGees own most of it.
The east entrance is blocked off unless you have a key.
So a couple of weeks ago I explored the north side since Google earth showed what looked like some good roads going to the top. They were blocked off as well unless you happen to have a key. So I made my way to the west side and found a pretty impressive west facing ridge which I had seen on Google Earth. It looks like there might be potential for some pretty good landing zones at the base if we could do a little clearing.
Today I drove back to the west side and was able to make my way to the top. What a view! I hiked the west ridge. There's also a short SW facing ridge on the north end of the west ridge that I hiked also. It requires a short hike up about 100 ft or so but looks very flyable I believe. I then drove to Keystone Peak where the radio towers are and hung out there for a little while. Nobody was there. It's definitely not safe to launch from there.
I eventually drove down the east side road which is very well maintained and waited at the entrance gate until someone came along with a key and let me out. I then scouted a potential LZ at the base of the east side which is plenty big to land in and is covered with grass. And there's an airport about a mile further from there that could be a possible LZ. In any case, it seems to have good XC potential.
The down side is in retrieving anyone who lands on the west side. The road I used to get up the west side was very bad. It was very rocky, very steep in some places, partially washed out in places, very narrow and downright treacherous. The top vertical 500ft of it was well maintained, but getting to that part of it was challenging. I actually enjoyed driving the bad part of it but I'm not really inclined to drive it again. Assuming we got a key and got permission to fly there, we could drive up and down the east side, but it would take about 2 hours to retrieve someone who lands on the west side...unless we were to put a lot of effort into fixing the lower part of the west side road I drove up today. I'm going to try to get a key and see if we can get permission to fly there regardless. I heard that the reason it's all so blocked off, is because of all the drug trafficking that goes on up there. So we may be able to get a key...I don't know but I'll find out.

I took lots of pictures also....I suppose I could post them if anyone's interested.

Nice. I'm curious, as I'm not familiar with this range, how far is it out of Tucson and in what direction?

Regardless, I'd like to see some pictures if you're willing to post them.

Thanks for sharing.

It's like 20 miles SW of Tucson. A few miles West of I-19. Look for McGee road or google Keystone Peak. There's a huge amount of mining going on just east of the Sierritas.
