Greaterville fire and Box Canyon

Post by jlowery » Mon May 02, 2011 4:19 pm

A new wildfire has been reported in the Santa Rita mountains, near Greaterville. Helicopters and an aerial tanker are already engaged. Report at http://www.kgun9.com/story/14556713/gre ... -of-tucson.

This fire will affect flying at Box Canyon. No TFR has been posted yet, but probably will by tomorrow morning. Watch http://airspace.nifc.gov/mapping/nifc/index.cfm for updates.

Update: at 4:30 PM Monday, channel 4 TV news reports the fire is up to 700 acres, 2 aerial tankers are engaged, and Box Canyon Road (i.e. Forest Road 62) is closed.

Does anyone know the current status out at Box? Has anyone flown it since the fire?

I'm thinking of heading out there this afternoon and don't want to be turned around by road closures.

Thanks for any info.

I haven't been out there since the fire, but the road was reported opened by the news several days ago, and the fire was reported 90% contained on May 5th. It topped out at 1825 acres.

There is no current TFR in the area.

For current TFRs see http://airspace.nifc.gov/mapping/nifc/index.cfm
