Portland P3 looking to log Arizona airtime

Post by Lance Woolen » Tue Dec 05, 2006 2:48 pm

Hey There,
I'm a P3 form Portland Or wanting to log some of your great local sites during the first week of January. I think I'l have 2-3 days mid week (but thats flexable) in Tucson to tag along with any willing site guides. Any takers? I'm a confident P3 but not overly so, and I follow directions well. I realize I'll likley need a temp membership and thats great with me.
Thanks.

Hi Lance,

Firstly- we're a pretty small community with right now, only a handful of PG pilots. And- perhaps only 4 of us who have the experience to show a new pilot our sites. But- with that in mind- we'll do our best to get you out. There are a few of us (me not included) that sometimes fly mid-week.

We've got a few sites within about an hour's drive from town, from which you then get to enjoy a rigorous hike up a mountain. Most of our launches are steep and a bit rocky. As long as there isn't some weather system moving through that causes high winds- the winter flying here is actually pretty consistent, and offers reasonably regular late afternoon glass-offs with terrific desert and sunset views. It's mostly pretty smooth this time of year- so it shouldn't be a continuous SIV course- like it is in the summer months.

Touch base with this forum when you get into town- and you've got a good chance at being able to enjoy a flight from Box Canyon. As a P3- if you've got a good sense of where to be in the sky and know enough not to get caught in the lee of ridges- you'll be fine.

I posted some photos recently in this thread:
