I'm new here. Have a question:

I'm planning on being in Tucson in Feb for the Gem Show. I'm not yet a pilot, (will be taking my training in June) but am anxious to watch paragliding from the launch-site. Just don't know where launch-sites are around Tucson. Seems there are some up around Pheonix, but time won't allow me to drive up there. I should be in Tucson for about 5 days. Can anyone give me some tips where I might watch flyers?

Welcome Chris. The Tucson area flying community is pretty small, so it's not as if there are a gaggle of pilots out on any given day. Weekends are your best chance, and most of our sites require a hike to get to the launch area. All are at least an hour's drive from town. (except A mountain)

This board is a good place to meet up with us when you get to town. If it's not too windy, there's a good chance that we'll be going out any given Saturday or Sunday afternoon and are happy to have company.

Bring your camera.

My Dad has a winter home in Tucson and I'm familiar with "A" mountain. Does anyone paraglide from there? An hour's drive is no problem and I don't mind hiking.............used to do a lot of that in one of my past professions! Heck, I always have a camera with me. Thanks for getting back with me.

Thanks for the "welcomes". I've spent a lot of time on the Paragliding Forum and ocassionally haven't felt welcomed. There are a lot of nice people over there, but a lot of cocky ones who look down their noses at beginners. It'll be fun if I can hook up with some of you when I get to Tucson in Feb and watch you fly.

I'm studying for the HAM license test and will have a call sign and (hopefully) a radio by then, so at least I can listen in. Do most of the pilots out there use 2-meter?
