Book: Collected Classics of Arizona Hang Gliding

Post by hangwind » Sun Jun 28, 2009 9:36 pm

John, (et al)

I'm going to put together a book with the help of my friends about hang gliding in Arizona.

I want to invite the pioneers of hang gliding (and paragliding) in Arizona to be involved. This is not a "hang gliding only" book, it will be about paragliding as well. New guys, pilots who haven't flown in a while, those who fly all the time, everyone.

The old, new, triumph and tragedy.

I think we can do a really good job.

I will personally contact my friends and acquantances of old for their story. Pilot's like Bob Thompson, Jim Grissom, Don Jones, John Leslie, Brad Linsey, Ole, Mark Clarkson, Jeff Reynolds, Chuck Rhodes and don't think I forgot you, I didn't and please contact them yourself to let them know everyone is welcome.

I used to be the Historian for the AHGA, it was my job to make sure you are remembered.

The interest that I have seen so far is positive, everyone I have asked has offered to write a story with images.

Think about a good story, an adventure you have had hang gliding or paragliding and write about it. Send it on to me, I will mesh all the stories together in a chronilogical order...

The book will be self published, that is, it will cost a few bucks to produce each one and then I am targeting a price of $15 each. All proceeds will be turned back to SAHGA for what ever the club decides to do with the money.

SAHGA is a old club in the United States, one of the oldest and I can't think of a better way to get a bunch of pilot's together besides actually being out on the hill.

Rick Fritz, Andy Rockhold, Jason Otto, Orin, Jacque, Tony Barton (hey, he used to live in Tucson) all you guys, please, someone write about Arjan and I'll get Marty D to write about Dixon.

The names above are in no way anything other than a random pick.

So many stories, everyone is important.

Please, since I am banned from AHGA web site, please post this there too.

Send a note to: hangwind@cox.net or call me at 602 684-2271 to find out more if you don't understand what I would like to include from you.

Not looking for many rules, just get the story in electronic format and send on to me in an attachment and or in e-mail along with your images. If possible, include dates.

The most important thing is to have fun doing this.

I think it would be cool to have some of the new guys at South Mountain write about getting high there the first time in their paraglider or taking a short XC. There will be no shortage of XC in HG in AZ...

I have help, it will turn out well.

Thanks.

Ole has written a couple of books, the above is the cover for his. He is going to contribute to "Collected Classics..." For you guys who don't know Ole, he is a long time Arizona pilot. His story is fantastic and he is a great writer. The cover picture is of Jim Afinowich at 16,000' with Zinantecatl-the Nevado de Tuloca below. Jim is also an old Arizona pilot.

I have been involved with another book somewhat like "Collected Classics..." I have a pretty good resource base to help me make sure this book will come to light.

Again, the pilot's above are only a short list and the topics I have suggested are from memory. You write about what you want to write about. The book is a collection of pilot stories, it won't be my book, it will be our book and along with having a book that you are in, it will generate a little change for the club.

That's how you do it.

I placed links at the ozreport.com and paraglidingforum.com web sites. The forum here is quiet, I enjoy that but it is a bit difficult to use for organizing. The two above represent national and international forums that will help reach pilots outside of this forum.

I'm shooting for about a year for publication and availabilty.

Thank you for your interest, I really want to see your story in book form.

Take care.

Update: Ole has committed to write one for us, Will Gadd and Bob Thompson are in as well. I'm working on getting a hold of Mark Clarkson for his story, suggesting that he write about the first XC's off of Shaw Butte in the Quicksilver.

I've had some really interesting e-mail conversations trying to get people to write about their flying. It is very interesting to note how people view themselves in the scheme of things. I'm looking for stories, not looking for you to validate wether your flights are worthy... They are.

Anyway.

It's fun talking/writing with guys about the old days.

Later this fall/winter, I will start approaching some new pilots for their story, I may very well interview a few new guys for inclusion if I don't recieve enough of the current crop for print.

I'll check in from time to time and update.

Please remember, this is a volunteer project, I will not make one single cent from making this book, any profits will be donated to the club. I only want to see flying stories from our state to make it to book form. It is a project that I have wanted to do for years...

Wow, I am almost finished with Ole's books.

He did a great job of capturing the hang gliding life with his own adventures.

Bob Thompson just sent an e-mail, he is well into his story and I am sure Bob will do a great job. I've known him for about 30 years now and Bob is one of the driving forces behind the AHGA, getting it started and organizing it and the cross country contests for many many years. One of the highlights of my life was to receive a AZ XC contest 3rd place trophy from him.

He is up in Colorado, a sailplane pilot now. I've got some time with him in the sailplane as well.

Anyway, his story will be a classic for sure...

Michael Grisham, looks like he is in.

He writes beautifully and is quite a pilot too. I've known of him for quite some time, I really like his story from Mingus...

Quite a collection of stories so far, I've got a couple of ideas for stories that haven't even occured yet from talented writers.

I promise to represent Arizona well.

Don't know if you've gotten a response from Tony Barton, but if you have, ask him for some 'Buddy' stories. Buddy was his pet Raven that he raised from a chick. They flew together and such. Great stories.

I haven't gotten to Tony yet. I'm contacting people one at a time.

It is so interesting the responses I am getting. Most people get what I am trying to do, others? Wild responses.

Some don't even think their stories are worth the effort.

I disagree.

There are many books out there in other disciplines like I am putting together. They are some of the greatest reads because they are like books within books, short stories.

It's a hard road but anything worth doing is worth hard work.

But thanks for the riminder.
