The winds might cooperate for Mustang on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb 17 and 18. Is anyone else interested?

OK, I can probably afford only one day this week, so I'll plan on Thursday.

Thanks John,

this customer has already postponed the maintenancewindow already twice.. So I take into account that he will postpone again and put my glider into my car tomorrow (just in case).

I will check the forecast in the morning (both Wednesday and Thursday) and make a decision to fly or not to fly) each day.

The predictions look like Mustang might work today, but the wind could be on the high side. I plan to be out there around 2 PM and might launch around 5 PM. I will have my cell phone 549-8250. My other phone is 749-1296. Hope to see you there.

If the wind might be too strong, wouldn't it be better to go box canyon?

Change to Box

Post by lewsmith » Wed Feb 17, 2010 11:20 am

Guido,
Yes, BOX is a better choice today (Wednesday Feb 17). I will be a BOX around 2 PM and plan to launch from the first knoll.

Report on Box flights

Post by lewsmith » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:15 pm

Guido and I both flew from the first knoll at Box on Wednesday, Feb 17. The wind was WSW (and more West aloft) 5 TO 17 MPH. Guido launched a little before 5 PM and tried to use the SW bowl to bench up to the top. Instead of going up, he got 2 collapses and ended up with a short ride. I launched a bit after 5 PM and followed Guido's suggestion that it would be a good idea to soar the first knoll instead of the SW bowl. There was surprisingly little lift but I did manage to soar the first knoll for 20 minutes.
The prediction for tomorrow, Feb 18, looks too strong for Mustang and unless it changes, I may not go to Mustang. I will make a decision in the morning.

Canceling plans for Thursday, Feb 18

Post by lewsmith » Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:48 am

The predictions are to strong for me , so I am canceling my plan to fly Mustang today. However, it should be good for speedwings!

The lower knoll has some history on collapses, especially in a SSW condition. Glad to hear it all worked out.
I know I have experienced some rough, rotor like air in that area scratching with my HG.
I flew Box on Monday afternoon/evening. it was NNW I stayed up about an hour. Nice to see snow on the north face of the PG hill side, small patches on the road in on the north shadows.
