Saturday "A" Mountain?

Post by jlowery » Fri Feb 26, 2010 6:04 am

Saturday afternoon looks like it might be good for HG at "A" mountain. Weather Underground has the surface winds at 15-20 kts south from 2 PM to 5 PM. 6000' winds aloft will be howling - 20 to 30 kts south.

Note for those who haven't flown it before - this site has some special requirements. See the site guide at http://www.sahga.com/amtn.html.

If your thinking about flying the A you need to get a waivier sgned and in mine or John`s hand before COB on Friday so we can post it to the City`s Risk mangers office. There are of course other requirements- Be current -both in your flying skills and with your USHGA membership- check out the LZ and go with a authorized SAHGA pilot to get checked out. It`s a great little in town site, hang IV or have a sponsor. This is our most visible site and it does have shifting wind conditions -that could leave you with out a place to land- the LZ being 90" around the Mt from launch!

Larry Tudor`s comment to a USHGA representative on site`s across the US- A mt- "possible the worst soaring site in North America!" and were proud of that!

Nuff Said!

Fly safe - enjoy!

Pre-frontal conditions, moving from stability towards instability, collapsing clouds, gust fronts, rain ...

A perfect day for the A.

It looks like the best shot is between 12-2 PM. I'll probably get there around 11 AM to streamer the LZ and check out the conditions.

"A" Mountain flying report

Post by jlowery » Sat Feb 27, 2010 3:41 pm

The forecast was 20-25 south, going southwest after 5. It turned out 10-12 south, suddently going southwest and eventually 15-18 at about 1:30.

Jason Otto flew before the switch, maintained launch altitude for a while, then landed after about 3 minutes in the front LZ. Mark Sawyer and I were set up but never flew. The "A" does it again!
