Request for help: HG/PG static display, June 11

Post by jlowery » Tue May 17, 2011 5:19 pm

I had an email and a follow-up call from a lady from the USFS who is soliciting SAHGA's participation in an outdoor-sports event at Parker Canyon lake on Saturday, June 11th. She would like us to promote hang gliding and paragliding at the event.

I asked if there would be room for a static display of a hang glider there. She said it's an outdoor event, and that they would make sure we had sufficient area to set up a table and a glider.

I'm willing to work the event, and can make up a photo board for display, and have brochures and stickers to hand out. But my HG is a little ratty to use as a static display. Would anyone else, HG or PG, be interested in participating, or in allowing me to use your wings as static displays?

Also, any additional suggestions for presentation materials?

John

I might be able to work the event and bring my wing. If there is space, I might be able to kite it.

I have a short PowerPoint presentation on paragliding that I've used to explain the sport to elementary and middle-school kids a couple times. We could add some slides on hang gliders to make it biwingual if there is a venue for running the presentation.

Cool, thanks! I'd appreciate the company.

I was thinking of bringing my laptop and running the "To Fly" videos and some of the in-flight videos I've taken. You could run the powerpoint on that.

Your welcome to use one of my wings John or both if I'm not flying that day, Don't know how much room will have to stage, but would be nice to display a single surface & double.

Excellent, thanks for all the offers!

I'll contact Rebecca at the USFS and find out how much room we'll have. I figured one HG +harness and one PG + harness, with the possibility of John kiting the PG if conditions and space permit.

I guess I'll also need to pull together instructor and flight school information to give out to the wuffos. If there's a business referral in this somewhere we wouldn't want to miss it.

There's no place to land right at the lake, as it's in a big ditch, however, there are big flat areas next to the road south of the lake a mile or two. It would be a very easy flight, once high over Miller or Carr.

I spoke to Rebecca at the USFS Hereford office, and we are definitely 'in' for their National Get Outdoors Day event, sponsored by the USFS and Parker Lake Mercantile. It will be held from 8 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, June 11th near the Marina, next to the mercantile store at Parker Canyon lake.

The booths will be outdoors, and we will have room to set up a hang glider static display, and perhaps a bit more. I will bring a 6' folding table and a couple of chairs, USHPA brochures and stickers and SAHGA business cards, a display board with photos and a tripod to put it on, and my laptop with some videos, a slideshow and (if I can get them) the USHPA "To Fly" HG and PG dvds. I'll also bring a portable awning for shade, if we have a place to set it up.

Unfortunately, we can't plan on having an A.C. outlet. If not, my laptop will handle a couple of hours for the video displays.

Eric Smith offered to come out and set up his T2, or we could use Rafael's Falcon. It sounds like John Wolfe might want to go to Green's Peak that weekend, but it would be great if someone from the PG side could come out with a wing, maybe kite it if conditions permit.

This sounds like a nice event, so even if you can't spend the day it might be fun to drive down there, check out the booth and the other vendors, maybe rent a kayak or pedal boat to see the lake. Here's the lake's web site: http://www.parkercanyonlake.com/

I'll come out to represent the chicks! Let me know what I can "bring" to the event.

I'm still planning to be there with my PG, my laptop, and hopefully a basic PG/HG presentation.

I'm planning to be in Pinetop June 15-18 and hoping to fly Green's Peak a few times while I'm there.
