Miller Saturday?

Post by jlowery » Wed May 18, 2011 8:07 pm

Obviously things could change, but the 72-hour ADDS forecast looks like Saturday might be a good day for Miller. Generally light east in the morning, light west in the afternoon, pretty high top of lift, 13-14k, lift 600-700 fpm.

Anyone up for another run at Miller?

The forecast for Saturday is still looking good. Very little shear, 6000' light east winds at 11 AM going 5-10 west by 5 PM.

I'll be meeting Eric Smith early, around 7 AM at his place, and we'll be passing Houghton and I-10 by 7:30 if anyone wants to meet there.

Anyone else interested?

Since tomorrow is supposed to be the end of the world, might as well go out and get a good flight before the Rapture...

Can Debbie & I join you? Maybe we can all sit around hold hands & sing Kum Ba Ya.

Since you put it that way John, we're going to try to make it.

Miller Saturday report

Post by jlowery » Sat May 21, 2011 8:54 pm

Eric Smith and I met Rafael Ramirez, Debbie Hodge, Eric Tucker and Rachel for a Miller Saturday. Conditions were very light out of the east, and when we got to the SE launch it was still light, although we were getting in cycles.

Rafael was doing a familiarization flight in his new WW Sport2, so he was first off with his typical flawless takeoff. Being early, he didn't find much lift, and landed after maybe a 20 minute flight.

Eric Smith was next, taking his first solo flight in a couple of months, and his first flight on the T2 in maybe a year. He had a great launch and found the same sinky air, but hung in and scratched like crazy, eventually getting back up to launch altitude.

I was off by that time, and followed a gaggle of birds to get right up over the PG launches. Eric Tucker followed shortly after, and the three of us boated around over the launches, Carr and Miller for about an hour. The air was weird and trashy, and although Eric Smith and Tucker got to 12000 or so over the peaks, I never went back there, instead poking around toward the valley to see if there was smoother lift out there.

I talked to Andy Miller on the radio as we flew, they were getting ready to fly Samaniego Ridge at Mt. Lemmon, 75 miles away! How did it go?

I ended up getting a little 18.5 mile XC to Jacque's Ridge, Eric Smith made two (!) trips to the Copper Top school before heading back and landing in the Miller LZ for about 2.5 hours, and Eric Tucker landed there as well, with around 2 hours.

Rafael and Debbie drove out to pick me up (thanks guys!) and we called it a day.

So, conditions weren't as good as expected, but it was still a pretty good day. Good soaring flights, no serious problems.

John
