Coronado N.F. will close noon Thursday due to fire danger

Post by jlowery » Mon Jun 06, 2011 2:19 pm

I guess we knew this was coming but it's sad.

I just confirmed by phone with the USFS Huachua ranger district that they will be closing the Coronado National Forest at noon on Thursday. The gate across the road to the Carr campground (and our access to the Miller launch) will be locked.

I also received an email from Rebecca Hodges in that office that the National Get Outdoors day event at Parker Canyon lake is cancelled, for the same reason.

This closure is until further notice, which I assume means until after the first significant rainfall or two.

Update: The information I have is that this is a forest-wide closure, which would include our Miller, Mt. Lemmon, Whetstones, and Box Canyon sites. All lie within the boundaries of the Coronado N.F.

The Mustangs are on B.L.M. land and are not affected by this closure order.

I've never flown any of the sites in Phoenix and it sounds like this would be a good time to check out some of those sites. I'm especially interested in flying Mingus if anybody else is interested.

Andy, Guido, and I will certainly be looking toward Mingus this weekend, but we need light easterly winds. Watch the weather for Prescott (over the back) and Cottonwood (out front).

Mingus has a lovely campground in the forest.

Sounds good John. Assuming good weather, we'll probably follow you guys up there....and perhaps camp out as well.

I'm hoping some more of the HGs will go.
