Cancer Hike and Fly

Post by BaldEagle » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:41 pm

Hey Lane, so, we'll hike for the Cancer Society, Then we'll just fly because we're up on top of a mountain. Our Flying won't have anything to do with The American Society.

How can that be against the rules? What If I hiked for them, and then Read the Book of Mormon, or Jumped Rope, or God Forbid, smoked a cigarette, and drank a Beer? What does that have to do with it?

I guess they're trying to avoid some sort of Liability, if one of us got hurt or something.

Guess we'll have to say we're just practicing Hiking with our gear, as a workout.

And besides, that, they accepted my money real quick.

For sure Steve, I'm right there with you. I just wanted to give some of the event organizers a heads up about our plan and I think it was blown out of portion. As though it was up to them to make the call on what they see as a "very dangerous" activity. But you're right. We've been flying there for years. We have all the necessary permission to launch from there.

Eric, the event organizer in the past has made some calls and found someone willing to go to bat for us - mentioning that "if you guys have flown there for years and have permission to do so I don't see why you can't do it after the hike".

So we're going to do it. We're still working with folks to get our HG and PG gear up there ahead of the hike. If that doesn't work out - the PG folks will just hike their gear up.

And for you and I steve, this will be about as simple as the mere approach to Elden.

Some thoughts about good Public Relations:

The American Cancer Society probably has a permit giving them (exclusive?) use of Sentinel Peak Park ("A" Mt) for part of March 3, and if so allows them and the city to expect participants to follow certain guidelines and responsibilities. On this day it should be whatever the Cancer Society, public, and City of Tucson feels adds to the cancer walk event.

Regardless of any rights that SAHGA members have about flying off "A" Mt we should be very sensitive to public and city expectations on that day.

Our continued rights to "A" Mt flying depend on our delicate relations with the public (good PR) and the city administration. So we should be sensitive to Public Relations (this high profile day especially) and not let any egos jeopardize our flying sites. I think we should try to participate (add to), not stand out, that day.

Just some thoughts.

A Mt Cancer Hike

Post by Eric » Tue Feb 21, 2012 9:40 am

I spoke with City representative`s regarding flying on March 3rd. I confirmed with Joel Pederson- Risk management, that our insurance is valid. A Mt Park director Renee, has given us the go a head.
Nadine at the ACS has been duly informed.
Seem`s it was all a misunderstanding.

If you would like to fly on the 3rd, you need a current A mt card, be on the ACS list, be a current USHGA member an SAHGA member.
We need to meet at the LZ by 0630 that morning an drive up in one vehicle only.( We can use my suburban) If you have an questions give me a call 405-3814.

That's good news.

Thank you Lane for coordinating the walk for cancer for the club and thank you Eric for contacting the city to let us fly on that day.

Now lets go hike and fly.

Done Deal! Thanks Eric.

I'll make phone calls, using the list of team members, two days before the hike to get everyone dialed in with the plan.
