Zapata WRE- World Record Set today by Jonny and Dustin

Post by morey » Tue Jul 03, 2012 12:26 pm

Freaky. I'm sitting here watching a SPOT generated map of Dustin, Glen Volk, Jonny Durrand flying a world record attempt. Looks like they're over 150mi into their flight today and moving nicely.

6:30 update (I guess it's 7:30 in Texas). Dustin and Jonny are still in the air and approaching 400mi

Looks like it's nearly 9pm in Texas. Sundown near Lubbock is 8:56 today, so they've got a little more time. They look to be on final glide around 480mi with speeds of 60mph. Dustin and Jon Durand are seemingly flying with each other. World Record Day

Still in the air. Pushing close to 480 miles (I think), Dustin looks slightly ahead of Jonny, but I can't tell altitude. They've been duking it out in the sky.

Jonny is down east of Lubbock. Dustin landed 2 miles further. Some interesting rules about pilots flying together, as if Jonny landed first, and Dustin didn't beat his distance by more than 1%, the record would belong to Jonny... although I suspect they'll file together. Gary Osoba reported speaking with Dustin just after landing, and apparently he's got a great story about his last hour of flight. Looks to be 475mi

"Dustin said that he was climbing at 10,000′ at 150 fpm at 8:30 PM. Sunset was 9:01 in Lubbock, and Jonny landed at 9:02. They both carried strobe lights to allow them to land within a half our of sundown.

Dustin states that they both went on final glide wing tip to wing tip and Dustin was able to eek out two extra miles on Jonny. Dustin in a Wills Wing T2C 144 and Jonny in a Moyes Litespeed RX 3.5."

should be a great advertisement for WillsWing.
