Miller Saturday 9/22- Flight Report Added

Post by morey » Fri Sep 21, 2012 11:58 am

Looks light east aloft again, but this Saturday- much boomier.

the soundings prediction I'm looking at says light 5-10kts ENE to ESE- i.e. East launch should be good for PGing. TOL - way up there.

No takers- and I'll end up going for a long bike ride instead.

Eric Tucker, Eric Smith and myself hit Miller on Saturday, with Rachel generously offering to help with wire crew and driving duties.

Winds on launch were a bit gusty and often crossing from the right (SSE) from 40-70 degrees- with a few launchable cycles thrown in. The Eric of Tucker variety launched first and got pretty quickly drilled.

I walked up to launch and miraculously found it blowing straight in and light- so didn't waste any time and waltzed off. Did a couple of passes in front of the reef and found nothing but sink, and soon was high tailing it out of the canyon in 1500 down. 10min later I was on the ground.

Smitty took off a few minutes later and was able to hug the ridge and eventually get up. Then get up high... stinkin' high. Like way over 16K with no gloves or jacket. A cloud street set up heading over the back and off he went with a SSE tailwind. Over the Canelo hills, Sonoita, the rear Box LZ, got low at Mt Fagan, over Corona de Tucson, the Fairgrounds, eventually landing at Fred Enke golf course, over 3hrs in the sky. Most of it he said was some pretty sweet and relaxing air. Heck- I was driving home that way anyway so it was an easy recovery. Excellent flight Eric!
