Task Flying Basics

Post by John Wolfe » Thu Nov 15, 2012 6:49 pm

At the November 2012 meeting there was interest in a short class on the basics of task flying, and the consensus was that we should hold the class after a regular meeting.

The focus of this class will be on, well, the basics:
- features of typical tasks:
- start cylinder
- start times
- way points
- start and end of speed section
- goal
- setting up your GPS for task flying
- programming your GPS with a route representing the task
- managing the GPS during the flight

I will try to fit the presentation part of the class into 30 minutes. Then, we'll practice programming tasks into your GPS until you get it or you've had enough for one night.

I have experience programming the Garmin 76 series as well as the Flytec 6030. If you have another device, please let me know, and I'll read up on it before the class.

I'm presently targeting the January or February 2013 meeting for the class. When I can commit to a date, I'll post again on this thread.

During the January meeting we agreed to have the first task-flying basics class after the February meeting. Please bring your GPS.

Those present last night mentioned the following devices:
Garmin eTrex
Garmin 76
Flytech 6020, 6030

If you have another type of device and you're planning to attend the class, please tell me which device so I can research it a bit before the class.

I'm going to miss the February meeting, so I'd like to move the task-flying class to the March meeting.
I've built the presentation, so I can deliver the class whenever it's convenient. If there is sufficient demand for this class before the March meeting, please post here or contact me, so we can schedule a time and place to do it.

I will be delivering another class in central Phoenix on the evening of June 18th. This one will also include a brief presentation from Dustin (DAP) on air space restrictions.

Please let me know if you're interested in attending.
