Lane Lamoreaux incident at Soboba 1/27/13

Post by BaldEagle » Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:11 pm

Hello SAHGA guys: Scott Warren, a Flagstaff pilot and friend of Lane's posted this on the Flagstaff Paraglider site on Facebook. He asked me to post it on the SAHGA site.

Lane, my prayers are with you. Adding you to Bob, Andy, Steve, and all the others that are on my daily pray-for list.

Dear friends,

I have some very sad news to report.
Our good buddy Lane Lamoreaux is in the hospital at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, in Moreno Valley California- in critical condition-

Phone number to Medical Center- 951-486-4000
Code for hospital info on Lane is his birth-date- March - 09- 1983

It is my understanding that he has thankfully gone from critical condition- to critical stable... but still has multiple operations, procedures, and a long road to recovery ahead of him.

It was my observation that Lane got blown over a ridge- while attempting to top land in quickly deteriorating conditions, while flying at Soboba California, on Jan 27, 2013.
Once he had crossed the ridge line- he was hit with massive rotor- had an instant and 100 percent total collapse- and threw his reserve- it did not have time to inflate.....

He hit the deck from about 60 feet up by my estimate-
I was less than 1000 feet away at this point- racing towards him on full speed bar when it all went bad......
He hit the deck and was immediately dragged 60+ feet through the worst rock and boulder field I've ever seen in my life- after his wing and reserve unfortunately re-inflated...
Most horrible experience I've ever seen in my whole life....

When I saw Lane fall out of the sky and hit the ground-
I was down on the ground, by his side, within 90 seconds-
I immediately radioed for an emergency air rescue-
It took approximately 30 minutes for the chopper to show up- they apparently had to bring in a Cal Fire heavy Huey due to terrain and weather conditions.

THANK YOU!!! to THE CAL FIRE chopper crew & local police and EVERYONE who was there on-scene, who helped to save Lane's Life.......

BEST THING I've ever seen in my life- a chopper coming to rescue my buddy.....

THANK YOU- to the entire team of doctors, nurses, and all the pros at the medical center.....who are still doing everything they can for our brother-
Thank you also to my other best bro- Jason Boyd- for being there with me- and for being able to bring his medical expertise and formidable knowledge to bear- to be able to distill and interpret the mass amount of medical information flow- for Lane's family, and for everyone else- in real-time....Thank you Jason.

If it hadn't also been for another pilot- Dave Turner- up in the air on a PG with a radio- to relay my radio calls for an emergency air rescue- to the ground station, six miles down range, on the other side of the ridge- we probably wouldn't have had the chopper on site- in time to save Lane's life.
THANK YOU- to Dave....
I was told that Lane could have bled to death in another 15 minutes or less....

The ONLY lesson I can find out of this tragedy right now-

**Fellow pilots-PLEASE-ALWAYS HAVE RADIOS ON out in the field- ALWAYS!!!!!**

Radios- cell phones, SPOT's..... anything and everything.....

Look out for your buddies when you're flying- PG's, speed wings, BASE, wing-suits- whatever....no matter what you are flying...doesn't matter-

EVERYONE should have a radio on -all the time- period!........

If you're out flying and you don't have a visual or you haven't seen or heard from one of your buddies on radio for a while- go find them and get them on radio........

Lane's whole family is there with him- they are a remarkable group of people who are providing the best support any one of us could ever hope to have.
Lane is the toughest guy I know- he is a bright spirit- a fighter, and has an indomitable will to live.
He is going to need all the help and support he can get.
It is my humble opinion that he probably has a 1 to 2 year road to recovery ahead of him... I'm not a medical expert.

I don't want to go into the awful details of Lane's injuries- but he is hurt very badly- and he and his family will need all the support, good thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes that we can all bring to the table...

Thank you to everyone for your support, thoughts, and prayers.
I am so sorry to be the bearer of such sad news.

Oh, shit, I am so sorry to hear this.

Thank goodness Lane has been in such capable hands throughout the whole ordeal. His physical condition probably helped him survive the accident and I hope it will help him with a speedy and complete recovery.

Sorry to hear that this happened to Lane--if anyone has his permission to release the exact nature of his injuries and they know what they are, I would appreciate a description.

To update you all, I've been chatting with his buddy and it appears that Lane is in stable condition, but he is most certainly not out of the woods. He is intubated/ventilated and unconscious and he has massive injuries--even by my standards. I don't know what his neurological status is but he may have sustained a head injury as well. I'm very worried about him.
