If we get a NW flow this weekend, I am taking my PG to Box.

Saturday's winds look a bit strong, but Sunday might work. However, Sunday's winds look to be southerly, so Mustang or South Mountain might be the place.

Scott, it would be great to see you, anywhere. It's been a couple years, I think.

Looks like Box is the place Saturday and Mustang is the place on Sunday. Saturday's winds aloft is a bit strong. 280 at 10 at 6k, 250 at 17 at 9k. Sunday is probably the better call. I just hope the east push doesn't dominate.

Arrived Mustang 3PM. Very cross, like 90 degrees, from the south. Ate lunch. Watched the wind. Decided to checkout Whetstones.

Drove over to the Stones. Forgot how long and rubbly that road is. Hiked up above the HG launch. Blowing straight in, nice velocity for PG, maybe 8mph. Found a relatively open space big enough to layout and launch. Then I did my risk/reliability evaluation:

Conditions were good.
I wanted to fly.
I had driven all that way, invested all that time, gas.
I haven't flown in ages.
I have only flown the Stones once, and that was in a HG years ago.
No way would I make the HG LZ in a PG, so I would be landing on the alluvial fan, dotted with a windmill, lots of century cactus, barbed wire fence, and power lines.
I have never been in the area I would probably be landing.
My friend that accompanied me was not a pilot nor experienced driving a 4X4 on steep rubbly roads.
I don't know if anybody has ever flown the Stones in a PG.

I chose not to fly. So my friend and I hiked around with my dogs and took in the view.

@Scott. Sounds like a good day for hike. Andy found a great place to launch near the top of the Whetstones. Andy and I have flown there together once, and I think Andy has flown it at least one other time. For what my opinion is worth, you made a great call, and I really appreciate your taking the time to share the decision process with us. Are you available to fly with us this season? Should I add you to my SPAM list?
