TIME TO CROSS ALASKA OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST!
USHPA’s 2013 Club of the Year, the ARCTIC AIR WALKERS, is hosting a Fly-In, July 3-7 in the Land of the Midnight Sun. Cost is just $40 which includes an awesome AAW club T-shirt, BBQ with beverages, contest entries, prizes and swag. 3 possible flying sites include Alyeska Ski Resort, Eagle River and Hatcher Pass, all with easy access and located within 20-80 miles of Anchorage. All sites provide spectacular Alaskan views from the air and ground. Contests will include a Costumed Flight, Rubber Ducky Drop, Furthest Traveled and more. Other activities available include fishing, hiking, rafting, shopping, wildlife cruises, kayaking and much more. We are sure some of your flying buddies have come to Alaska, ask them about their trip and invite them to come back!
AAW Club Members will coordinate daily for the 3 possible flying sites depending on flying conditions:
1. Alyeska Ski Resort: Located 35mi southeast of Anchorage in Girdwood, Alyeska is accessed by a tram for approximately $28/day of unlimited rides that takes you right to launch. 75 flights and a P2 rating are required to fly at Alyeska or fly under direction of an instructor. Huge LZ. Hotel available at base of tram.
2. Eagle River: Located 20 mi northeast of Anchorage, Eagle River is an almost drive up to launch site that requires a $5/day LZ fee and a P2 rating.
3. Hatcher Pass: Located 80mi northwest of Anchorage, Hatcher Pass is a favorite of many Arctic Air Walkers due the vastness of the area, multiple launches and the availability of a drive-to launch, not to mention historic mines and gorgeous scenery. Several hike and fly launches also available. One hike and fly launch requires a $5/day parking fee. LZ is almost as big as the sky! Limited camping is available in the Hatcher Pass area.
Some of the Arctic Air Walkers members have space available in their homes for visitors during the Fly-In. This is a great way to get to know club members as well as to keep the cost of travel down. Contact member Chris Alexander at 907-345-2440 and he can put you in touch with members who still have space available.
Several contests are planned including a costumed flight so get creative. (Hint: This is a holiday weekend)
Arctic Air Walkers will host an Alaskan Style Barbecue on Friday night July 4th (location to be announced depending on the day’s flying). We will have plenty of Alaska Salmon and Halibut available as well as brats and dogs for the non-fish lovers, along with side dishes and beverages (adult and otherwise). Family members are invited to join us for $5/person. Kids 8yrs and under are free.
All registered participants will receive one of our spectacular AAW T-shirts free. Additional T-shirts are available for purchase at $25 apiece. If you missed C.J. Sturtevant’s article on us in the October 2013 issue of the magazine click here to read it http://www.ushpa.aero/magazine_archives.asp. (Actually it will be here when USHPA catches up with their backlog!)
There is plenty to see and do in Alaska for non-flying family members. Click here http://www.anchorage.net to find a myriad of other activities as well as places to stay and get around in Anchorage. Make a memorable family vacation out of the trip!
