Old Pueblo 50 Mile Santa Rita Trail Run

Post by Scott » Mon Feb 09, 2015 12:38 pm

Morey and I are signed up to do the Old Pueblo 50 this year, but I'm not ready so I am going to work the aid station at 40 miles. Come help me cheer Morey on to a successful ultra marathon finish. Volunteers are needed to staff aid stations and the barbeque “kitchen” at the finish line. Volunteers can contact Joe Dana at joetrailman@yahoo.com

The Old Pueblo 50 is a 50 mile running race on forest service roads and trails through the southeastern part of the Santa Rita Mountains (part of the Arizona Trail). This year’s race begins Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 6:00AM at Kentucky Camp. Course Map: http://oldpueblo50.com/coursemap.htm Approximately 180 competitors will participate in 2015.

My training wasgoing well, but overdid it and now I've got a bum knee. Haven't got in the miles necessary. We'll see if I make it to the starting line on March 7th.

Hope I see you at Aid Station 40. It's been known to be the best aid station! In the past they've cooked bacon there (I realize, not too exciting for we veggies) Thanks for volunteering. They need the help, as most of the TTR group is rebelling against the OP 50 this year, as the race director has been inactive.

CV50/50 was an amazingly well run race. I volunteered at it this year. You may want to train for that this year! It's quite a bit easier terrain, and there's a 50K option.

Morey,

I'll have some good veggie food for you at mile 40. No bacon if I have any say in the matter.

I spent a month on a sailboat recently - no running - and there is no way I will be ready to cover 50 miles by race day. But I have resumed my training and will be doing an ultra in the next year. They comped my OP50 entry to next year.

Ice and ibuprophen, the athlete's cocktail.

Weather is looking PERFECT for this weekend's race. Yay!

I should be running by the Box Canyon LZ, (22 miles in) oh, maybe 10:15am or so. It would be cool to see someone out kiting, but I realize, it will be a little early.

the full route looks something like this: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=lhtshqskjnezxrnf

See ya' at 40 Scott. I should be a wreck by then. :) If I'm there by 3pm, I'm having a really good day. More likely to be there around 4pm or a little after. If you don't see me and it's 6pm. Ugh. not good.

Thanks for being out there Scott. Good to see you at 40. Sorry I couldn't partake in the hummus! I was probably hyponatremia (hydration good, electrolytes low), which makes one lose their appetite. After I got my salt intake up, my stomach started feeling a bit better and was able to eat more at 46.

I think I just need to start bringing s-caps with me on long runs. I keep trying to take in enough electrolytes with the higher salt sports products (e-gels, margarita shot bloks), but it just isn't enough. It was good to see that your aid station had the s-caps. I took a few.

oh- I passed the LZ at 10:12 am. right on schedule; hit your station at 2:26pm way better than I was hoping. Finish time 10:48:23. Pretty happy with that, and I was able to run it through to the finish. At least the parts that were at all 'runnable' for me. A lot of really steep rocky nasty stuff in that course that I just hiked. The downhills are more brutal than the ups.

Morey, congratulations, and thanks for sharing this with us. I feel a little sick just thinking about that run, having experienced electrolyte deficiency once in a big way hiking out of the Grand Canyon.
Any chance we can lure you out for some flying this season?

Morey, you looked terrific at 40 miles, really solid and composed. Congratulations on a fabulous run. What did your GPS say the final distance was? 52 miles?

my Suunto Ambit2 said 50.77 miles and 6,800 ft of vert. The ups weren't as bad as the downs.
