green's peak

Was just reading the newsletter and can't believe it. Someone actually wants to go to green's peak! I tried for two years to get a group together from the Phoenix club to go for a Springerville fly in. The fbo, Harold Swartz, is really cool and said to come out anytime. He offered all the runways and grass for towing (I think it is 9500' give or take) and also the possibility of using the hangar for overnight storage so we don't have to break down. Also of interest is the relatively high tech repair facility that a careless hang pilot might find useful.

The area is one of the most beautiful in the region. Sailplane pilots travel from Albuquerque just for the chance to fly over the white mountains south and west of town and also the blue range south of the airport, probably the largest parcel of uninhabited land in AZ. The bonus is, when the wind is on, you can drive 20 minutes and be at green's peak with a road my bonnevile can climb in about 3 minutes flat. Top landable and unlimited lz. It's just like the craters, grass everywhere.

If you go you really should check with the guy at the airport and try to bring your tow rigs. Also, south of town is a great looking possibility...flattop mountain...with drive up access. We talked to some of the people working the offseason at Sunrise about going off the ski runs, but I can't remember if we had a language difficulty or if they said no. I'm sure in this time of year a pg could manage to go off there. Money talks. How bout Escudilla...that would be a sweet flight. Was the home of Arizona's last grizzly.

So what is the predominate wind direction needed for Greenes Peak. And what is the vertical?

When we flew their twenty years ago we launched from the north and south west. The Forest Service has advised me that a use permitt wil be necessary.

So how do we apply for that. It sure would be nice to get out of the heat and fly.

The best is southwest, the face is about a quarter mile across. There was a small slot to the east, but I don't think it's launchable. I don't recall any north, but there is the possibility of going west just to get off the hill. It may not be soarable. The best quality is that you're so high that you need sweaters all year..vertical is 600 I think. Turnaround if you sink out is probably 10 minutes max on smooth dirt.
