Flying Report from CA

Post by Gunter » Mon Jul 12, 2004 5:18 pm

I spent the weekend with old friends in California. Friday I drove to San Diego and crashed at my friends house (Frank and Lori). Saturday we drove to Marshal in San Bernardino for their fly-in (10 year celebration since the opening of the Andy Jackson Airpark). The parking lot was over flowing. I had three flights, two short once of about 15 minutes each (top landed), and one of about 50 min's. Max altitude was about 800 over launch. You were launching into the convergence layer. (LA smog). One really had to work hard to stay up and look for some thermal activity. It was good to see some old friends which i have not seen in a while like Mitch Mc Aleer, Anne and Enloe Connors, Marcello, Roman and family, etc.
On Sunday we headed to Torrey Pines. It was clouded in till about 1pm when it started to clear up. Winds were marginal and cyclic. Some of the PG pilots were flying their Tandem wings in order to stay up. I managed to fly for about 30 min's the first time (since I'm now light on my wing) before the winds deminished and I had to make one more pass, which of course got me aride to the nudy beach below. I must say the hike up was a lot easier (only 300 ft), than going up to the lower launch at Box. Later I had a second short (15 min.) flight and landed up top just before it shut down for the day. I hopped in the car for the short (7 hr) ride back to Green Valley. Gunter
