green's peak

I was just reading in your newsletter about needing a permit for Green's Peak. Just had a great flight there tuesday night in the arcus. There is no need for a permit. The glider flies great without one. Actually we just went thru the process of securing one new site and attempting to secure another (Humboldt and Ord, Tonto NF). In the process, we learned that you are entitled to jump off any hill you can legally access. It's another story to alter the terrain and build a launch (like we're doing at Humboldt). At both sites they told us they can't stop us from flying, the roads and the mountain are open to the public. The same should apply to Green's. The road is wide open to the public. The firetower used to be a popular lookout for tourists. I saw several rangers drive right under me and didn't have a problem.

Green Peak

Great news to me:

I spoke with a Forest service employee at Sitgreves and their advice was to fly with a club on a weekend event you need a permitt. If you want to drive up there and try to get a flight that is fine, a club camping flying weekend is another.
If there is no problem I would really like to go myself.
Where did you camp? I wanted to camp there thru the weekend and fly.
Thanks for the heads up Dustin as I sure did not want to drive that far and get turned away.

Go north on the forest service road toward the hill. It's a few miles. Where the road goes up the hill, you should split left instead and go about 200 yards then turn left on a small dirt track towards a stand of firs. It's an obvious spot to camp and also a great place to land. The grass resembles a golfing green. I flew the wnw face, but the sw face looks even better. Probably blows up every afternoon. When the storms fade in the evening some good blowdowns make glassoffs. The pasture in front of the sw face is scattered with boulders under the grass. Check out a good spot before you land a hg there. Best bet is probably next to your camping spot or across the fence in the grazing pastures.
