Sunday Glass Off at Box

Post by Gunter » Sun Aug 29, 2004 10:49 pm

We arrived at the Box Lz at around 3:45 pm with a new PG pilot to this area (Brian M). Brian practised kiting for an hour while Ross and I hiked up to the lower launch. We got there around 5:15 pm. The wind was blowing 8-12 out of the N- WNW. I made some minor adjustments on my new Advance harness before I launched into a light cycle. I had to work the ridge eastward for quite some time before I caught a small thermal which took me up a couple hundred of feet, which in turn gave me enough altitude to fly into the bottom of the bowl below the upper launch. I worked the bowl and finaly made it to the upper launch. From there it was easy. I caught one more thermal (probably the last thermal of the day) which took me up to over 6700 ft. By this time glass off had set in for smooth hands off sailing. This gave me a chance to make additional adjustments on the harness. Ross launched about 10 minutes after I did. He also worked his butt off trying to gain enough altitude to get up to the upper launch, but with no luck. He worked the ridge for quite a while and tried a few times to go into the bowl, but alas - no lift. After 40 minutes I headed out over the Lz to to my normal maneuvers - B-line stall, spirals, wing-overs, full frontal, 50% asymetrical, and big ears, to a soft landing just before sunset. Ross landed shortly thereafter. We both agreed that it was a smooth, relaxing, and fun flight. We only regret not sharing such a great flight with other members of SAHGA and other PG pilots. Gunter

Sounds like fun.
I spent the afternoon on the training hill with seven students. They all flew! They were all from the Fort in Seirra Vista, a couple of blackhawk pilots and some intellegence officers. The north hill worked for hours. It shut off at 630 and blew out of the ssw till dark!

Saturday was nice smooth lift to cloudbase at Miller. I headed out over the valley to find only sink. No XC!!
