Miller flight report for Sunday

Post by Eric » Mon Oct 04, 2004 1:36 pm

The weather forecast for Sunday was , light south wind in the morning and going west south west in the afternoon.
That`s pretty much what happened, well from what we saw, more north west. We got an early start and picked up Durkee (my tandem student) in Mustang corners and loaded up Justin in the lz. Pilot`s were John and Allen and Dave and Justin and I.
We arrived at launch to find 10 to 12 mph straight in. I got set up and suited up the student and gave him a through briefing. We did practice runs and hang checks etc.. we finally launched at 1100. We were able to round the corner to the east face with out losing much altitude. The east PG launch area provided enough lift to 360 in twice, zero sink. We cruised over the pipe and were able to 360 there as well. I let Durkee fly the glider out along the ridge line and we practiced a stall. We arrived at the lz at 6500 msl and soared with a redtail hawk. After several 360`s I lost the lift north of the lz. I had to head back rather high since a tandem Falcon is no glide monster.
We set up and landed next to the road due north of the spot. Durkee was happy with the flight. I was a little dissapointed to be on the ground so soon, 18 minutes seemed so short. Loaded single and with no bank restrictions I could have circled more agressively. Tandem students tend to lose there cookies in a tight bank. I wondered why no one else was launching?

The wind on launch had turned off and from what I hear the pilots waited to see it get better. It did not improve, in fact it started to blow down. In the lz the wind was strong south, 10 to 15 from the south, go figure Miller shutting off...
Durkee and I broke down and walked over to Nick`s for a cold one! The pilots on launch had to break down!
Several cold ones latter the crew arrived and we loaded up and headed
home.

If it's blowing in on launch at Miller... LAUNCH! Don't wait around until it blows down.

If I've learned anything about flying Miller... that's it.
