V day flying report
The weather service predictions of se winds aloft held true until the afternoon. I sure wanted to soar on V day!
After some work in the morning I wanted to fly in the afternoon.
The winds were too light to consider box.
My neighbor was easily convinced to drive for the Lemon.
We arrived at launch at 3pm and the U II was set up in no time.
The launch conditions were light N, good at least the canyon would be pumped full. After setting up the wind had settled down to 3 to 5 nnw.
I launched at 425 and never did cross the canyon proper. The side hill was bouyant and I rode the lift to the head of the canyon and crossed there at 8700 msl. Samaniego ridge was popping little thermals I rode back up to launch level. The air was smooth like velvet, with large light lift areas. I taried for 40 minutes on the ridge playing. I really did not have much altitude but with the n wind and bouyant air I decided to head for Pusch ridge. It seemed to take a long time to glide out. The light N wind helped me glide to Catalina State park with altitude to spare. The sun set came on all red and orange and I scooted out into the valley. I saw no reason to land in the park, I had plenty of altitude. I glided towards Oro Valley country club. I pulled up a little short of the fairway I like to land on. In the reduced light and altitude running out I put the U II down in the large wash north of OVC. Perfect stand up in the fading light.!
That`s three Lemon flights this year so far!
One hour 40 minutes and breaking down in the dark, what a V day !
