New Year's Day- Flight reports added

Post by morey » Sat Jan 01, 2005 10:45 am

I didn't wake up early enough to do the A this morning, but Winds aloft look absolutely perfect for PG at the Mustangs this afternoon.
The 2pm forcast for Fort Huachuca is below:

The 5pm forcast actually is a bit lighter and a bit more west (but still SW) than this.

Any Takers?

Mustang Report 1-1-05

Post by morey » Sat Jan 01, 2005 11:56 am

A fairly perfect Mustang day. When Gunter, Allen and I arrived on launch a bit before 3pm, it was blowing in at 12-15. It got a bit cross from the south for Gunter and my launch- but they were both easily executed. It straighted out for Allen, and he performed a nice, aggressive run off the hill. Nearly perfectly smooth with the high clouds blotting out most of the sun, we boated around over the Mustangs for as long as we wished. Getting only up to about 1000 over max, but plenty of smooth lift in all the usual places. Latecomers Ross, Red and Scott arrived on top a bit before 5pm, just in time to capture the end of a perfect day. Gunter and Allen probably both had nearly 2 hours of sky-time. I had 2:10. The latecomers had shorter flights, well, all except Scott.

In a carefully executed plan to garner the coveted "Turkey" award. Scott hiked his pack to the launch, only to discover that there was no glider in it. Both Ross and I took close passes at launch in attempts to top land so that Scott could fly our wings. Heck, I had been in the air long enough and would have been happy to offer Scott a flight. But reality sets in when one gets close to the launch. Realizing that it slopes down hill, has agaves, boulders and various other implements of destruction. So, with discretion, we both opted not to top land, and Scott hiked down.

Sorry I missed the 'A' this morning, but when Fred was launching, I still had another 2 hours of sleeping to do.

"A" Mountain New Year's Day

Post by jlowery » Sat Jan 01, 2005 5:48 pm

A pretty good group showed up.

Fred Leonard had hiked up the road, while Jason Otto and I waited for the Park department to open the gate at 8 am. As a result, Fred was off the ramp at 8:09 in a S5 breeze for the first flight of 2005. Looking stylish, too, in his traditional white tuxedo jacket.

I saw Randy Kerchill driving up as I drove down to pick up Fred, and by the time we returned the big Dream was almost set up. He took off a little after 9 AM for the second flight.

Chuck Park, Orrin Smith, Eric Smith and Mark Sawyer were also there. Chuck and Mark had their gliders, but I left around 10 and don't know if they flew.

Happy New Year!

John
