Oatman Trip- Jan 15-16

Post by morey » Wed Jan 12, 2005 2:31 pm

Jason is organizing an excursion to Oatman Mountain this weekend. Weather looks perfect so far. It's a 3+ hour drive, so a few folks will be camping over. Oatman can be good for both HG and PG.

Directions: Take I10 West towards Phoenix. Exit I8 west. Take Painted Rock Road off I-8 (about ten miles West of Gila Bend) and go North. Where the road veers right and a dirt road continues West, follow the dirt road to the South LZ. The road to launch is by the riverbed on the East side.

More info about Oatman at the AHGA site guide:

check first with the ahga message board. there's some bullshit happening with oatman concerning launches and insurance and permission. probably worth checking it out.

crossing the gila to oatman

Post by Chuck Park » Wed Jan 12, 2005 7:56 pm

My map shows the road to Oatman crossing the Gila below the painted rocks dam. That could be a problem since the Gila contains water from the Salt and Verde Rivers which seem to be doing quite well lately. If the crossing is not passable I see another road further west (sentinel) that leaves I 8 and goes north to the railroad. It looks like a paved road and maybe the crossing is bridged? If we can get to the railroad then we can go back east to Oatman.

dustin is right and Chuck, you are on it regarding your map check. Indeed, the rivers are doing quite well. The Salt River is flowing through Phoenix like it hasn't since 1998. Definately be prepared with your best Moses moves or take the route you suggest. I have not been to Oatman in quite some time but could have had one trip interupted just like yours could have been if there wasn't another fart smeller along.

We circled like BANSHEES while the water was flowing.

Oatman is good.

Collect your grade.

p.s. ozreport.com There is a cool picture at that issue of Dustin at Rio, usually davis writes about Dustin in the ozreport when they compete together.
