I am in a seminar all day Saturday and busy Sunday morning, so my only window for flying is Sunday PM. There are a few folks looking for a low stress flight off Mustang, so if we have light SW winds Sunday PM, we'll head out.

Thanks for the message. You can count me in if the weather permits. Please let me know if it's a go ASAP so I can be prepared to come down from Phx. 480-282-8407

Mustang Sunday

Hi Scott,
Yeah I'm very eager to go out to mustang again. Also would love a lesson on interpreting all that winds aloft data. Keep us posted!

Well, let's answer some questions. Here is the winds aloft forecast:

FOR USE 1800-0600Z

FT 3000 6000 9000 12000 18000 24000 30000 34000
TUS 1112+13 1906+08 1706+01 0206-13 9900-28 190844 191554

This is for use from 1800 zulu to 600 zulu. Tucson is 7 hours behind Greenwich, so that would be 11AM to 11PM.

So at 3000 feet in Tucson, the winds will be from 110 degrees at 12 knots and the temperature will be 13 degrees C.

At 6000 feet in Tucson, the winds will be from 190 degrees at 6 knots and the temperature will be 8 degrees C.

9000 feet, 170 degrees, 6 knots, 1 degree C.

12000 feet, 20 degrees, 6 knots, -13 degrees C.

So what this is telling me, is that the winds will be E - SE. That's good for Miller. I'm not sure if we can even get up Miller right now. It may be covered in snow.

Anyway, it doesn't look good for Mustang. but I'll check the morning update.

Interpreting the forecast

Post by Allan » Sat Jan 15, 2005 10:05 pm

Thank you Scott! That's how I thought the figures were organized but I wasn't sure so it's great to have it explained like that. What I'm still confused about is why that would be good for Miller, because the miller launch is at an elevation between 6K (190 degrees) and 9K (170 degrees) so I would guess the wind would be straight out of the South at 180 degrees, but you say that means the winds will be E-SE there.

And how might we find out about the road conditions, short of driving out there?

I'd love to go....

Just checked the AM update. It is East and the road up Miller is closed (per a message board post by Eric Smith).

Miller

The only post I find from Eric is from the end of Dec. and states that the road will be closed until Jan 7. It's hard for me to believe that it would be closed because we've only had .15 inches of precip in the last 10 days in Patagonia and it's been so warm.
