Oatman Fly-in directions

Post by jlowery » Wed Mar 09, 2005 9:49 pm

For anyone headed for Oatman this weekend, Dan Schroeder of the AHGA posted amended directions because the Gila river is flowing, cutting off the usual road into the site. From his post (http://forum.ahga.org/viewtopic.php?p=2186#2186):

Since the river is still flowing, you have to take the back way to Oatman. From the painted rock road turn off, (14 miles west of Gila Bend), you must continue going W. on I-8 for another 15+ miles to the next Sentinal/Hyder exit. Go N/NW, over the river and continue on until you hit a stop sign at the railroad tracks. Take a right and go N. for about two miles. The dirt road will make a right turn and is marked with several signs saying the road does not go through. Follow that, going E. to the S LZ. The LZ turn off is marked with a tall white PVC pole on the N. side of the road.

Warning:
Around five miles N. of I-8, on the road to Hyder, the road drops down into the river valley and takes a hard right turn before you can even see it. Watch your speed, unless your looking for a good thrill.

To get to the Painted Rock exit that Dan mentions, drive north from Tucson on I-10 about 55 miles to I-8 west. Exit onto I-8 west and drive 76 miles, passing Casa Grande, to exit 102, Painted Rock Road.

The total driving time is 3 - 3.5 hours, distance about 175 miles with the detour.

Note that the nearest gas and food services are at I-8 exit 115 (Rt. 85 north) in Gila Bend.
