Wanted: Radio

Post by Allan » Wed Mar 16, 2005 9:18 pm

Does anyone have a good radio they want to sell? I want to have the frequencies people mostly use around here for PG, as well as the USHGA ones. (Are you guys mostly using USHGA frequencies? )

Allan,
Yes, we typically do use the USHGA frequencies, as not everyone is a HAM. 151.925 is our club freq. Other than some Mexican taxi company that we pick up while flying Miller, and some golf club restaurant that we hear from Box, it's generally pretty clear. We always know when they need another case of beer (mmmmm... beeeeer).

You can pick up a Yaesu Vx-150 which is a good solid radio, I think for about $100 new- which is pretty darn cheap. I like that one becuase it has a solid metal housing and has it's display on top. YMMV. It's a fairly straighforward Modification to open up the freqs to the USHGA band (but of course, illegal). There are instructions on the internet on how to modify almost any of the commonly sold radios. Just google MARS/CAP mod and the radio model.

Thanks Morey, that was very helpful! I also found some excellent articles by Rich Parry that appeared in Paraglider Magazine. They are at http://w9if.net/iweb/papers/ . I was inclined to buy a business band radio because, besides wanting to be legal I don't want to void the warrantee, and I'm lazy about taking apart equipment even though I'm good at that stuff. But it looks like they are a lot more expensive.
