Training hill Sat

Post by Eric » Wed Apr 06, 2005 6:03 pm

We will be going to the Sonotia valley on Sat. All are welcome. A flight from the moutains seems in order as well.
We may train in the morning and fly the mountains in the afternoon.
Call for details or I will post as the weeks weather unfolds.

Looks like a Whetstones kinda' day.
I'm game
(although I wish I had a 54lb glider to hike up the hill, rather than a 76 lb wing...but I know... my fault)

Post by rafa » Thu Apr 07, 2005 3:29 pm

Hey guys,
just joined the forum, I've met a few of you when you visited coolidge a few weeks back,
I just got my hang 2 and a new glider (eagle 180) I have 4 flights on it so far, all aerotows, but would like to do some footlaunches since its been a while,
All my flying has been in cooligle pretty much, but I think its time for me to fly other sites, specially around here, in tucson,
you guys mind if I join you this weekend?
let me know what your plans are
Rafael

Rafa,
You are welcome to come on out with us to the training hills.
The afternoon we will end up at the Whetstones. In the launch area and bailout lz there are some unfriendly plants. If you intend to fly there you will need a sponsor or instructor. Do you have a radio? The Whetstones is do able for a Hg II with an instructors help in the right conditions. The bail out LZ is small, you should have some experience spot landing.
Please feel free to call me and give me a litle more info on your experience level and expectations.

Sunday

Eric-

I'd be interested in the training hills Sunday morning (I've got to be back in Tucson early afternoon). However, at the moment both ADDS and Accuweather are showing about 15 out of the west for the morning with higher winds as the day goes on. I'll check an update this evening and post my intentions.

Sunday Update

Post by Fred » Sat Apr 09, 2005 8:30 pm

The updated forecast is still showing winds about 15-20 out of the west for Sonoita tomorrow, so I think I'll sleep in and wait for another weekend.

Sunday Traing Hill report

Post by Eric » Wed Apr 13, 2005 9:39 pm

The group included Velma, Rafael,Fernando,David,Mike and I.
We arrive early and were set up by 815.
Everyone flew, David and Fenando had great first days. Velma flew three times and Rafael flew from the top twice. We quite around 1130 conditions were picking with long lulls as well.
Velma made us lunch and we relaxed by the vehicles.
Jason caught up to us in the Valley and we headed for Box.
Conditions at the meadow seemed a bit strong. We loaded up the beast and drove to launch. The wind was pretty gusty at launch, I relaxed in the truck for an hour. The conditions were improving according to Jason. He set up and after an hour started to break down. His sacrifice seemed to work, so I set up! Seeing me set up Mike set and Jason set up again.
We were all fooled, it stayed north and gusty. The peaks were a lot lower , so I launched. It was soarable. I worked the north bowl for 20 minutes a thousand over. Picked up a small thermal and headed over the back at 7200msl peaking at 7680 at the spine. No problem gliding to the meadow arrived at 1100 agl. I flew around for 20 minutes checking out the thermals and wind conditons in the LZ. A lot of north wind gusting to 25. I landed and was all packed up, enjoying a cold beverage, when the truck arrived at sun down.
Jason and Mike broke down on launch

Eric,

I would love to join y'all at the training hill on Saturday. I do not know how to get to the training hill. Could we meet someplace saturday morning? I can take two or three in my SUV.
