Dec 30 at Box

Post by lewsmith » Mon Dec 28, 2009 6:38 pm

Count me in for Box on Wednesday, Dec 30. I will be leaving early since it takes me a while to hike Box - and I like the top launches.

Hope you guys have a good time ...
Winds look SW early before or up to 11-the southwest bowl is pretty nice! due west after- not so good right up the spine- small bowl lower down... Forecasts are just that .. best guess SW where the sun is.. my guess is you will do better at Mustangs..
Only time will tell.

Current FSL forecasts indicate too much north and too much speed for Mustang. The NW bowl of Box is looking promising.

It sure would be nice to have a driver so we could drive to the HG launch and hike to the top from there.

John asked me to email him the XCSkies forecasts for both Box and Mustang, so I figured I'd just post them.

So here's Mustang:

And here's Box:

The forecasts are telling me that we have a really good chance of being blown out for PG, but Eric is trying rally some HG types.
What are the rest of the PGs thinking? Are you seeing something more encouraging in the forecasts than I am?

Lew and I went and parawaited for a few hours. Called it a day at around four or so. Oh--Lew, you need to tell them about your re-discovery on the north side!

Please tell us about the conditions. Did you go to the top or stop at the first knoll?

A safe way to hike down Box

Post by lewsmith » Wed Dec 30, 2009 6:02 pm

Wyatt and I did not fly, but we did hike down the original Box trail on the Southwest spine. It is a much safer way to hike down Box than the one that we usually use on the North West spine. (The NW trail is much worse than it was 5 or 10 years ago - especially going down - and it is almost dangerous at night.)
If you don't like hiking down Box, ask me about the original Box trail. It is a bit longer, and takes more time going up, but it is almost as fast going down.
