Re: Fire in Parker Canyon
No TFR posted yet as of 8 AM, but the fire is reported to be up to 5000 acres and within 2 miles of the lake. Residents are being asked to evacuate. Reports at http://www.svherald.com/content/news/2011/05/24/fast-burning-blaze-clouds-city-s-skies and http://www.kold.com/story/14701994/residents-near...

Miller Saturday report
Eric Smith and I met Rafael Ramirez, Debbie Hodge, Eric Tucker and Rachel for a Miller Saturday. Conditions were very light out of the east, and when we got to the SE launch it was still light, although we were getting in cycles. Rafael was doing a familiarization flight in his new WW Sport2, so he ...

Re: Request for help: HG/PG static display, June 11
I spoke to Rebecca at the USFS Hereford office, and we are definitely 'in' for their National Get Outdoors Day event, sponsored by the USFS and Parker Lake Mercantile. It will be held from 8 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, June 11th near the Marina, next to the mercantile store at Parker Canyon lake. The bo...

Re: Miller Saturday?
The forecast for Saturday is still looking good. Very little shear, 6000' light east winds at 11 AM going 5-10 west by 5 PM. I'll be meeting Eric Smith early, around 7 AM at his place, and we'll be passing Houghton and I-10 by 7:30 if anyone wants to meet there. Anyone else interested? John 520 444 ...

Excellent, thanks for all the offers! I'll contact Rebecca at the USFS and find out how much room we'll have. I figured one HG +harness and one PG + harness, with the possibility of John kiting the PG if conditions and space permit. I guess I'll also need to pull together instructor and flight schoo...

Miller Saturday?
Obviously things could change, but the 72-hour ADDS forecast looks like Saturday might be a good day for Miller. Generally light east in the morning, light west in the afternoon, pretty high top of lift, 13-14k, lift 600-700 fpm.
Anyone up for another run at Miller?

Request for help: HG/PG static display, June 11
I had an email and a follow-up call from a lady from the USFS who is soliciting SAHGA's participation in an outdoor-sports event at Parker Canyon lake on Saturday, June 11th. She would like us to promote hang gliding and paragliding at the event. I asked if there would be room for a static display o...

PG at Miller in May
Hi, Soren Miller is rated a P3 site, so you'll need a sponsor. As a P2, at least in the beginning you'll need to fly and land early before strong thermal conditions kick in. As an HG-only pilot I'm not comfortable sponsoring a PG pilot in strong thermal conditions. Sorry about being a drag, but ther...

Box status
I haven't been out there since the fire, but the road was reported opened by the news several days ago, and the fire was reported 90% contained on May 5th. It topped out at 1825 acres.

Additional information on the aerostat
An Air Force article about the aerostat system. Not too technical, but interesting:

Miller Canyon this week
You fly when conditions allow, or you don't fly. On Thursday, ADDS has the 6000' and 9000' winds aloft at 0-5 NE at 11 AM, 5-10 NW at 5 PM. Dr Jack predicts top of lift at 12-13k and the -3 at 10-12k, thermals 600-700 fpm. On Friday they have 6000' and 9000' winds at 5-10 SE at 11 AM and 5-10 SW at ...

Re: Ft. Huachuca Blimp downed by high winds
It would be interesting to know why they were flying the thing on a day as windy as today was. The Libbey field weather station reported gusts of up to 45 mph at 1 PM when the accident occurred. This is not the first aerostat lost at Ft. Huachuca since the installation, the second of its kind, was c...
